The Return of Movie Night!

Movie Night

Has been temporarily canceled do to a lack of interest and technical support. If anyone is interesting in creating a platform to show great movies and discuss world issues please contact the Language Link office right away at 262.5101

Language Link is back in a big way with a solid line up of great educational documentaries including cartoon shorts by the folks at Schoolhouse Rock, then the film, and hopefully a solid discussion about the ideas and feelings shown on screen. Come one come all!

This Thursday at 19:30 @ FAC
An interesting humane look at a very scandalous group of very intelligent people. Knowledge is power, for better or for worse. Come check it out!

Location: Fundição Amilcar Cabral
Time: 19:30
Day: Thursdays

A quiet and relaxing night at FAC with a solid mix of music and boxing and the very gregarious Muhammad Ali. Instead of viewing the film in the attic we watched it in front on the sidewalk. We hope to see you next week.

A great film about an awesome ride on a train with amazing musicians and a whole lot of booze. The film went off without a hitch, except a slight power problem at the end.

A cool shorter documentary about my hometown and the birth place of techno music as the world knows it today. Dtown represent! Belleville what up!

Movie Night!

Movie Night has been cancelled until after the New Year. Happy Holidays Everyone!
To further assist you in your journey towards fluent English speaking we have Movie Night at Voz di Povo on Riba Praia (in the same building as the Cape Verdean Journalist'Associations AJOC ) in joint with Fundição Amilcar Cabral FAC. This is a completely free activity. We recently started showing a cartoon short from Schoolhouse Rock before the feature attraction, then there is a brief introduction to the film and then hopefully a hearty conversation after the film. Please give us your reaction to the film.

Our first film was: Why We Fight

An intense film about the military industrial complex in the United States and the perception about war from the American public. Well liked by the people there and is a must see. For more about the film click here.

It was a lovely night at "Voz di Povo" last Thursday where a dozen or so Praiense collected to watch "Super Size Me." There were mixed reviews, but overall a good film with lots of frightening statistics concerning diet presented in a satirical way in the HyperAmerican context.

Another great night of cinema at "Voz di Povo" with our friend from Flint, Michigan Michael Moore. The crowd seem to like this film and we hope more people come next Thursday.

Last night was another great night of cultural cinema with Fela Kuti and the intense images of The Shrine, which has recently been closed by the Nigerian Authorities and Lagos, Nigeria. Whether or not you agree with his politics and opinion, his music is simply amazing. If you haven't heard, educate yourself and get down!

Last night was another great installment of fantastic cinema at Voz di Povo. Jazz was taken in by the audience with absolute amazement at the pure raw power of the musicians and a couple of highlights were solos by drummer Joe Morello and Bassist Jimmy Garrison. We hope to see you all next week for another awesome film.

Last Night we celebrated Thanksgiving at Voz di Povo in grand fashion watching a terrific film about the city of Detroit, Michigan and the amazing band the Funk Brothers. Everyone there learned about an incredibly unknown tale in music history and enjoyed some unforgettable performances.

Mixed reviews from the crowd, but everyone seemed to grasp the perspective that the director tried to portray of this very troubled, brave, crazy, sensitive, interesting man called Timothy Treadwell.

After a late start, we encountered a technological meltdown. About 59 minutes into the film, "pimba" frozen. The movie was cut short, but everyone seemed to be in awe of this fantastic film. For all those present we apologize for the inconvenience and we will do our best to not let it happen again. Next week is another beautiful film about migrating birds. We hope to be able to replay Baraka at a later date, due to its true agreeableness.

A big turnout last Thursday and well done on the part of everyone who came. The films is truly amazing and the extra footage on the DVD really details how the filmmakers captured these amazing images.

Grant Writing / Procurement Workshop

On Saturday the 14th of November, 2009 members of ICIEG, OMCV, and ICASE came together with Language Link’s Jacob Cullen in the attic at Fundição Amilcar Cabral to share their experiences about their projects and learn more about how to improve there methods of procurement of funds in the English language.

The first hour was an experience exchange and then we moved into an explanation of how to utilize word documents with pertinent information and how to link those documents to the internet and compile cited works i.e. information from wikipedia.com about any topic to not only facilitate language learning, but to discover ways of browsing the net to improve ourselves and our respective institutions. Also, Jacob compiled some sample documents about how to write a grant in English and all the elements needed to create a successful grant proposal.

After some guided searching via google.com we began to figure out how to use basic searches to find information about grants available from funders in the Anglophone world. At the end of the workshop, everyone left with a greater knowledge about how to link his or her respective organization to funding-based networks. They sent emails, created contacts, and became members of the Angel Network.

Montessori Workshop

Teacher Workshop: “Management, Motivation, and Mathematics”

On Saturday, September 19th, the weekend before the teachers of Cape Verde began their school year, twelve teachers arrived at Fundação Amilcar Cabral for a workshop they had been selected to attend by Dra. Graça Sanches from the Ministry of Education. The teachers represented 12 of the 30 schools in the capital city. The workshop was put on as a collaborative project by Language Link and Karen Molina, an American educator and former Peace Corps volunteer. The topic of the workshop was “Management, Motivation, and Mathematics.”

The event began with a period of discovery with the participants sharing their knowledge of the Montessori Method. The Montessori Method has been in place for over 100 years and was developed by an Italian doctor who approached education by building concepts from the concrete to the abstract. The approach is a sensory hands-on method that helps children build concepts by giving them the opportunity for discovery and practice. Once children build a strong understanding of the foundational concepts underlying, for example, the decimal system; they are able to construct higher levels of learning and move into abstract concepts such as algebra and higher level mathematics that solely use representation and symbols. Each teacher picked up his/her bag filled with wooden materials and was asked to check out what was inside. The room was quiet with contemplation as the teachers placed a large wooden cube, 10 wooden squares, 10 small bars, and a hundred tiny cubes around their work space. They created designs and began the process that their students would soon be experiencing.

Teachers learned how to match mathematical vocabulary with the materials and while all of them had a clear understanding of their new resources, they walked away thoroughly pleased with their new skills to apply them to children’s understanding all the way through multiplication and division. They practiced games and patterns and went into great discussions about the value and the concrete conceptual learning that would be taking place in their classrooms through the use of the materials. By the end of the workshop teachers left refreshed with ideas on management, new ways of motivating students through a hands-on approach, and with the supplies necessary to make that possible. There were smiles and laughter around the room as each participant received his/her certificate. The dedicated group of professionals descended the stairs of Fundação Amilcar Cabral with an advanced understanding of mathematical lesson plans and hopes for good year of school ahead.
